The past two days we've been NWEA testing, and that basically means two days with absolutely no instruction and plopping students in front of a computer for 90 minutes. What do I usually do? Oh, well, I'll walk around and test my skills by mentally completing questions off of students' tests (not sure if that's allowed... so, sue me).
But this time was different. I recently learned about a free online tool that allows teachers to create their own library checkout system. I know my library has shelves of books placed with no rhyme or reason. And, they tend to grow legs and walk off throughout the year.
Students can browse books on the site and see if they are checked out or not. You can even set the number of books and time students are allowed to check out books for. Once they return the book, I have it set up to require students to complete a review form of the book. Other students will be able to read their peers' reviews.
Below is a view of my library. It's still a work in progress, but you get the idea.
Try it for yourself! Let me know how it works out for you!

Collaborative Group Work
I use collaborative group work in my classroom whenever I can. Not only does it allow for amazing differentiation opportunities, but it also gives students a chance to have some fun while learning.
One thing I've definitely learned... ALWAYS post norms. Here are mine.
Until next time,
Kristin

It is easy to point to the wall and remind students what the expectation for collaborative group work is. TRY IT! It works!

Inspiration
I recently attended the "Write to Learn"conference in Osage Beach, Missouri. As a first year teacher, this was the first chance I've had to attend a conference. Originally, I was supposed to attend with a colleague, but life happens, and she was unable to go with me. Even though I missed my trailer-mate (we share an outdoor trailer classroom), I could not have asked for a better experience.
Not only was I able to meet several teachers from all over the state, I was also able to meet, converse, and complete workshops with authors of educational study books I studied in college.
Talking with Donalyn Miller and Cris Tovani inspired me to start a blog. I figure, if these amazing women can both teach and motivate other teachers to make the most of their classroom, then I could do the same.
So, that's what I'm here to do. Share my experiences and hopefully hear some of yours.
Until next time,
Kristin
